At the end of 2022, 50% of the electricity demand in Greece will be covered by Renewable Energy Sources, said the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, speaking at the Economist conference. The figure was 30% in 2018 and increased as 5000 megawatts of new RES units were added in the interim, and the pace is expected to accelerate in the coming years: from 2023 new units of 2000 megawatts per year will be installed, meaning that in 2026 62 % of electricity demand will come from renewable sources. As the minister noted, the new law for the simplification of RES licensing will help to achieve the goals, as will the upgrading of networks and the installation of electricity storage units.
